Horse racing oddity: starting gate tractor malfunction

http://www.horseracegame.com

It may not have been as exciting as Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, but as Mary Rampelllini reported in the Daily Racing Form:

The featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., on Thursday was declared a no contest after the starting gate was unable to be pulled from the racetrack because of problems with a tractor. Wagers on the race were refunded, while bets tied into multiple races were given an “all” in the ninth race.

“We had a tractor malfunction,” said David Longinotti, assistant general manager at Oaklawn. “We told it to go, and it wouldn’t go. We’ll obviously completely check out the tractor tonight, and hopefully we won’t have any more problems with it in the future.”

The horses started to be pulled up at the top of the stretch in the 1 1/16-mile race. Jockey Calvin Borel, who was aboard the front-running Richwood Silver, noticed the gate and began shouting to his fellow riders while pulling up his mount. The starting-gate crew and outriders also waved off the field. There appeared to be no injuries as a result of the mishap.

Enjoy this video from March 13, 2008. Terry Wallace is the announcer.

Most likely the judges ruled a “no contest” and a general refund on all tickets… the same with major accidents/outside interference

    Disagree. When …
Disagree. When you’re calling a race 400 yards away with binoculars, you’re only going to see as far as the lead horse. No way would he have seen the gates.

My question is where was the clerk of the course? Should have rode to the 6 furlong mark and warned the field to pull up.

    I think about that …
I think about that all the time. In fact, when I’m at the track I always watch the gate being towed away before I turn to focus on the race.

I don’t blame the track announcer as much as others who work for the track. You would think someone would have noticed it and called it to the attention to the race caller.

Imagine what was going on with the spectators, particularly the ones in upper stretch. They had to see the problem and wonder how it would play out.

    It has crossed my …
It has crossed my mind before when watching live at my home track, “What would happen if the tractor gave out, and they couldn’t move the gate.” Just one of those odd things that cross my mind from time to time.

I agree about the track announcer.. The jockey’s began pulling up and easing their mounts long before he even noticed.

    You always wonder …
You always wonder about that. Every race, when the gate’s gonna end up in the middle of things, you’ve gotta wonder, what if they can’t move that big hulking thing….Well, there you go, hehehe.

I had money in this race; my tickets were looking good and then “poof”–the racing powers that be had the last laugh. I got a refund but I had the horse in the lead and a stack of them behind him. I could taste it.

It’s not too easy to realize it when you are intently paying attention to a race while looking through a pair of binoculars.
