So-called bridge-jumper bettors appeared home free when 2-5 favorite Paige’s Prize rolled to a 12 1/2-length victory Feb. 25 in the first race at Beulah Park (VIDEO), but moments later their anticipated small profits would vanish.

In the hours that followed, the stewards’ decision to disqualify Paige’s Prize was nearly universally panned by handicappers on social media siteseven players who said they benefited from the call. Some of those players suggested racing association stewards faced a conflict of interest because of a potential negative show pool if Paige’s Prize had won (although with net pool pricing any exposure would be difficult to determine.)

What’s Going On Here | Looking Like We Care - by Eric Mitchell | BloodHorse.com Blog Stable

“If your facility does not meet the standards that (fans) come to expect in their daily lives, they’re not going to come back.” – Russ Simons, managing partner at Venue Solutions Group.

Though spoken in 2009 at the annual University of Arizona Racing Symposium, Simons’ words still deliver a relevant and sobering message for the Thoroughbred racing industry. In too many cases our sport is trying to attract new fans with grossly outdated facilities.

The message horse racing is sending to new visitors with its dingy facilities, poor concessions, little fan education, and grandstands littered with losing pari-mutuel tickets is that we don’t care enough about our sport. If racetracks look like they don’t care, why should the new fan? We know the answer from Simons: They won’t.

Turf course could be used at the Fair Grounds this week, provided showers stay away

Turf course could be used at the Fair Grounds this week, provided showers stay away

Off-turf has become ingrained in the Fair Grounds lexicon lately. But the exclusion of turf races at the track looks like it’s finally coming to an end.

The Stall-Wilson turf course hasn’t been used since Feb. 2 and turf races have been run sparingly since January. A wet winter has kept the course too soft to use.

Fair Grounds vice president Eric Halstrom said the turf course should be available starting Sunday, provided it doesn’t rain. Showers are expected Sunday and Monday, so the relief might be short lived.
