Phar Lap wins the Agua Caliente Handicap- 1932

The great Phar Lap in his one and only international race winning the Agua Caliente Handicap (”Hundred Grander”) in 1932. As history would have it he died tragically days after the race. Many track observers said that they had never seen a horse cover the 2 furlongs of the back straight that Phar Lap does in this race.

    AMAZING VIDEO!! …
AMAZING VIDEO!! Have never seen it before. Thanks

And if anyones interested Phar Lap died from arsnic, a common additive to horses meals in the 1920s & 1930s.

And another trivia fact the saddle used on Phar Lap here is kangaroo skin, saddle was later aquired by “Iceman” (seabiscuts fill in jockey) so saddle may have been used on 2 of the greatest race horses.

Well, if they want to find out about why, check to see who benmefitted from the insurance, if there was insurance. It was probably an accident, but after the forensic found that he ingested large quantities of it, it just adds to the speculation.
Just sad, very very sad, no matter whatthe reason.

    when you talk of …
when you talk of true legends in sport the names of very few spring straight to mind. Then the world of horseracing comes forward..The name Phar Lap (which means lightning in Thai) heads the list.Australia has had many champions embrace its turf, Tulloch, Bernborough, Makybe Diva, Kingston Town and sunline just to name a few but all are yet to match the one and only. Phar Lap like Secretariat gave horseracing its chance to shine and the racing world is debt to the likes of these racing warriors.

Thanks, I did some research after I posted and of course you are correct. Even in the modern era many horses don’t reproduce their form outside their own continent (I lost heavily on Dancing Brave in the Breeders Cup!), so this was something very special.

    The best in the …
The best in the country aside from Equipoise whose owners were not willing to bring their horse as they knew how good Phar Lap was. Remember that he only raced once in the States and still rates inside the top 40 horses to have ever raced in North America.

Phar Lap did break the track record in this race; pretty good achievement since he also raced wide the entire way.

    I always thought …
I always thought that place of birth determined what country the horse comes from. The horse was born and bred in New Zealand, owned by an American and trained by an Australia. The horse is a New Zealand horse.
